The Bay Bed and Breakfast has been certified as Gold level greenleaders for 2015 and 2016.

What this means:

Energy

We have harnessed the power of the sun to generate electricity and provide heating and hot water.

A thermal store is heated by solar thermal tubes and boosted by biomass (wood) during the colder months. This in turn heats the central heating system and provides all the hot water for the property.

Photovoltaic solar panels generate electricity for the house and send extra power back to the grid.

All our lights are energy-efficient LEDs.

We have light sensors in bathrooms and common areas so there is no need to worry about turning lights on or off.

Our appliances are all A rated or above.

You can help by:

Charging devices during daylight; meaning they are powered by the sun.

Not leaving chargers switched on once items are charged.

Turn main room lights off when you go out.

Water

Our intelligent washing machine uses less water per wash.

Dual flush toilets reduce the amount of clean water used in each flush.

We collect rainwater for use in our garden in water butts.

You can help by:

Not running the tap while you brush your teeth

Lathering up in the shower with the water is off.

Leaving towels on the rail to use again; we'll wash them if you leave them on the floor.

Food and drink

Where possible we buy Fair Trade (or equivalent) and British produce.

We purchase supplies from Island businesses help support the Isle of Wight's economy.

We 'Love Food, Hate Waste!'

You can help by:

Not ordering more food than you can eat (We will gladly keep you supplied with a good breakfast to set you up for the day, but hate to see wasted food.)

Reduce, reuse, recycle

We actively try to reduce the amount of rubbish we throw away. We recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, metals, food waste, electrical and batteries.

We buy recycled content and/or FSC approved toilet roll.

We have a book exchange and magazine pile for guests to browse.

You can help by:

Putting recyclables in the right bin.

Not buying stuff you don't need while on holiday.

Cleaning

We cut our use of harsh cleaning chemicals and use green cleaning products, such as plant based products from companies like Ecover, and a mild bleach solution where required.

The building

Our Victorian building underwent a major renovation during 2014/15. During that time we:

Reused and recycled as much as possible, for example hundreds of old bricks were cleaned and used again on the property.

Used environmentally friendly paints.

Replaced old windows with modern high efficiency double glazing.

Topped up our insulation to keep the heat in.

Installed bike racks to support green transport.

Refurbished vintage furniture in the guest room.
